Separated from his herd, the guanaco, a South American mammal related to llamas, began to graze. The puma leapt, grabbing the guanaco in its powerful jaws, attempting to crush its neck. While the puma hung on, the guanaco slammed its body weight onto the cat, enabling it to escape. Photographer Ingo Arndt captured the struggle, which lasted only four seconds, in this dramatic series of photos.
