Lucky for the tortoise, it has a second defense. The tortoise shell is made up of upper and lower bony structures called the carapace and plastron. The carapace and plastron meet at the side of the body, giving the tortoise a fully protected skeletal box. The lion wasn’t able to solve the mystery of the tortoise shell this time. After the lions wandered off, the tortoise was able to continue on its way.
